Charles Borromeo was an Archbishop and Cardinal who was a prominent figure in the Counter-Reformation. He was made Cardinal at the young age of 23 and used his leadership in the Vatican to promote education and founded a literary academy. Charles Borromeo was known for his integrity and austerity, and so the driving out of corruption from the Church was a priority. He ended the selling of indulgences, founded seminaries and colleges for the education of priests and clergy, ordered for the reformation of monasteries, and called for the simplification of overly complex and distracting church interiors. Because of his reformations, he was disliked by many but persevered in his mission to eradicate corruption and suppress heresy in different parts of Europe. St. Charles Borromeo is the patron of bishops, cardinals, and seminarians. Today, we pray for the ongoing wise and courageous leadership of the chief shepherds of the dioceses across Canada, for our Canadian Cardinals, and the many men who are in priestly formation in our Canadian seminaries.

All Souls’ Day is a day to commemorate all the faithful departed. Specifically, for those who are in purgatory. It is a day to remember and pray for deceased brothers and sisters. We pray for them today that they may be cleansed of their sins, so that they can reach eternal life with God in Heaven.
